For every bad news story there are many more we don’t hear about, of ordinary people supporting their neighbors who are grieving or alone; standing with those who are suffering racial, cultural or gender inequities or injustices; caring for the sick, hungry, displaced or unhoused; welcoming and protecting victims of violence, asylum seekers and refugees; and being there for others in countless other ways. Thanks be to God for all these efforts to make our world better, in every community.

Christmas joy and New Year’s resolutions still fill our hearts. Now we are in February, an embryonic month for many of us, with nature slumbering and life hidden. Yet seeds, planted long ago, slowly begin to grow. Seeds of love, of hope, of social justice. As they sprout, they stir our hearts and hands to provide shelter for the homeless, food for the hungry, fellowship for the lonely. We are Companions; we are children of God. We do this in gratitude, with respect, and at the urging of a loving God.
