Selected Prayers

``The Eucharist, rightly understood, destroys all barriers.
We, being many, are One Bread, One Body.
Here, in Love’s home, class, rank, race, nation, vanish...``

Every month Companions receive a small booklet in the mail, the Intercession Paper. Day by day, we turn its pages, praying with our Companions. The prayers concern needs big and small, thanksgivings, and the aims of the Society. Each day of the week has a theme.

In this monthly feature of our blog, we select some prayers from this month’s IP, as it is called. If you’re so inclined, please join Companions in reaching out in love through prayer.

COVER

Gentle as a summer breeze,

the Holy Spirit moves in and through us.

Like the Winter sun warming us through a window,

the Spirit warms us and fills our hearts.

May this wondrous Love radiate through us

into all the world.

THANKSGIVING: SUNDAY AND EVERY DAY

Parker River Companion Barb Whitehair gives thanks for the book Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear, by Scott Bader-Saye. Reviewer L. Gregory Jones says, “He beautifully seduces us to trust God and to risk hospitality, peacemaking, and generosity.” A very timely and hope-filled book.

MISSION IN GOD’S WORLD: MONDAY

Sweet Jesu, the night before you died you told the disciples to abide in your love.

Help us to be rooted in your love which transforms, heals, and remakes us.

Help us to share your love in ways that restore the earth and bring economic justice,

peace, and community well-being to our broken world; in your holy name we pray.

Marguerite Judson, SCHC

California-Northern Chapter

UNITY OF GOD’S PEOPLE: TUESDAY

Heavenly Father, you hold the whole world in your hands. Your love for each of us is immeasurable and beyond our understanding. We pray that with your guidance we will unite in heart and soul, and join together in love, bringing unity to this torn world and peace on earth.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: WEDNESDAY

Lord, wake me up to recognize the ease of my life to assemble without fear, vote without hindrance, feel safety in contact with law enforcement.

Awaken my compassion for my brothers and sisters of color, differing ages and gender, beset by great challenges. Awaken me and prompt me to action.

Pam Van Siclen, SCHC

Maine Chapter

PEACE AND RECONCILIATION: THURSDAY

O Sophia,

Wisdom of God, Sister of God, Spouse of God,

I ask this day for the gifts of a mindful spirit

a thankful heart

a healthy body

and the eyes with which to see your kingdom

here in this world

wherever people are kind to one another

wherever justice is done

wherever healing happens

wherever children thrive

wherever the lost is found and the irretrievable retrieved

and wherever Love drives out fear.

Clare Keller, SCHC

Parker River Chapter

GROWTH IN THE SPIRITUAL LIFE: FRIDAY

Mother Mary, God the Father, Sister Sophia, and Brother Jesus, I appeal to your help in being conscious every day of your presence and your love. I request your support for strengthening my daily habit of reading prayers of praise to you. I ask your assistance in reflecting you in the world by being gentle, loving, compassionate, kind, and clear-sighted. I invite your encouragement for keeping my eye on the prize of your abiding peace and your redeeming grace.

PRAYERS PERSONAL AND GENERAL: SATURDAY

The Eucharist, rightly understood, destroys all barriers.

We, being many, are One Bread, One Body.

Here, in Love’s home, class, rank, race, nation, vanish …

made one with the Divine Humanity which, lifted up in sacrifice,

draws all unto Him, and which forever speaks out of the eternal glory

the revolutionary and recreative words, “Behold, I make all things new.”

Vida D. Scudder, SCHC 1889-1954

COMPANION DAILY PRAYER

Your grace, O Lord, be with us all who walk along the way,

that we may carry in our hearts your cross, with joy, each day.

As you have died, may we too die, to self, and so to sin,

conforming to your will for us, a holier life begin;

and as you loved, so may we love, as you forgave, forgive;

for only as you live in us shall we most truly live.

Janet Morgan, SCHC 1950-1997
